How to Ship Your Motorcycle

Your bike is important to you. It’s your freedom and your connection to the road. For that reason, you want to make sure that it gets there safely when you need to have it shipped somewhere. There are two different ways to do this, depending on where your bike is being shipped.

Shipping your motorcycle to the lower 48 States?

If you are going to be shipping your bike to the lower forty-eight states, the bike will, of course, be transported via a trailer. The most important thing to remember when transporting a bike in this way is to make sure you have them secured properly. One can do that by using four tie-downs, preferably with the materials being soft double-stitched ties. The soft material is not only secure, it’s also easier on the bike.

The preferred types of trucks and trailers are air-ride models. These models make the ride much easier on your bike by reducing the shock of bumps in the road, although if you’re looking into purchasing one of these, they are more expensive and require more maintenance.

Shipping your motorcycle to Alaska or Hawaii?

For shipping your bike to Alaska or Hawaii, one will obviously need to have their bike on the water at some point. This is where crating comes in. The best crates to use are those that are made of a combination of steel and cardboard. While many of these crates are usually made for Harleys, they can usually accommodate most makes and models. One can even get a custom crate made, if necessary. The most important part of the process is, again, in how the bike is secured. Much like with shipping via truck or trailer, the bike should be secured with no less than four tie-downs. When shipping via crate, it is also required that the bike be drained of any gas in the tank. The battery must also be disconnected in order to ship via crate.

However you transport your bike, the key is in making sure you are using the best resources possible to protect your machine. Always be sure to check on any company you are trusting with it to make sure they are taking as good care of your bike as you would.
